Greenpeace activists blocked the entrance of Bharti’s group headquarters at Vasant Kunj today compounding their campaign and displayed banners reading “Airtel – Switch off Diesel”.
Greenpeace informs that Bharti Airtel has backtracked from its commitment of a timeline for the public exposure of its carbon emissions from its complete operations and the termination of usage of diesel I powering its telecom tower operations.
Greenpeace also demanded for a written assurance from Airtel of a process via which they would end the usage of diesel.
COAI made a statement on 10th June saying that Greenpeace’s targeting of individual companies is a result of misplaced zeal.
The question that arises is why Greenpeace is targeting only Airtel because the towers are run by various companies and the infrastructure is shared by all the operators.
If we consider the case of automobiles in India then there are around 20 million automobiles in the country and excluding the two-wheelers these automobiles produce over 100 million tonnes of CO2 per year compared to the 5 million tonnes of CO2 produced by the complete telecom tower business.
Thus, the question is why target a single operator?
