Herald Norvik, Chairman of Telenor and Jon Fredrick Bakaas, its CEO have announced the start of 4G/LTE network in Longyearbyen which will be the world’s northernmost network.
The LTE test launch is to add various services to the northernmost record like northerly domestic fiber services, northernmost satellite station, 2G, 3G.
Svalbard had attracted various nations and powers around 1900, when industrialization and mining industry had started in the Arctic. On 3rd May, 1911, the Norwegian parliament had given its consent on building a radio telegraph station on Svalbard that was named as Spitsbergen Radio. The station was originally built in Green Harbor that linked Svalbard to the Norwegian mainland.
On multiple occasions the city and the inhabitants of Longyearbyen have served as a test centre for the implementation of new technologies and services of Telenor.
Longyearbyen is a city in a remote location but still its inhabitants today have the advantage of the latest technology in their regular life like fiber to the home, interactive IPTV, Mobile Broadband and Triple-Play.
